SUMMARY:Take Me To Your Reader: a Sci-Fi Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Take Me To Your Reader! Join us for another pop-up book club\, this time featuring Sci-Fi! Our March selection is The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nThere lived a girl named Petra Peña\, who wanted nothing more than to be a storyteller\, like her abuelita. \nBut Petra’s world is ending. Earth has been destroyed by a comet\, and only a few hundred scientists and their children – among them Petra and her family – have been chosen to journey to a new planet. They are the ones who must carry on the human race. \nHundreds of years later\, Petra wakes to this new planet – and the discovery that she is the only person who remembers Earth. A sinister Collective has taken over the ship during its journey\, bent on erasing the sins of humanity’s past. They have systematically purged the memories of all aboard – or purged them altogether. \nPetra alone now carries the stories of our past\, and with them\, any hope for our future. Can she make them live again?

SUMMARY:Take Me To Your Reader: a Sci-Fi Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Take Me To Your Reader! Join us for another pop-up book club\, this time featuring Sci-Fi! Our February selection is sci-fi classic\, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nSeconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway\, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect\, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who\, for the last fifteen years\, has been posing as an out-of-work actor. \nTogether this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”) and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox–the two-headed\, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian\, Zaphod’s girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan)\, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin\, a paranoid\, brilliant\, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig\, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years. \nWhere are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don’t forget to bring a towel!

SUMMARY:Shelf Care: a Pop-Up Book Club for the New Year
DESCRIPTION:Join La Crescent Public Library and Franciscan Spirituality Center for some Shelf Care! Our January pop-up book club is reading and discussing “Enchantment: Awaking Wonder in an Anxious Age” by Katherine May. We’ll start the group with a grounding exercise to shed the hectic-ness of the day\, discuss Katherine May’s book and ways we find “enchantment” in the world\, and all attendees will have the opportunity to engage their senses through meditations with the elements. Coffee and tea will be provided in this relaxing meetup for those looking to add more enchantment to their everyday life. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nMany of us feel trapped in a grind of constant change: rolling news cycles\, the chatter of social media\, our families split along partisan lines. We feel fearful and tired\, on edge in our bodies\, not quite knowing what has us perpetually depleted. For Katherine May\, this low hum of fatigue and anxiety made her wonder what she was missing. Could there be a different way to relate to the world\, one that would allow her to feel more rested and at ease\, even as seismic changes unfold on the planet? Might there be a way for all of us to move through life with curiosity and tenderness\, sensitized to the subtle magic all around? \nIn Enchantment\, May invites the reader to come with her on a journey to reawaken our innate sense of wonder and awe. With humor\, candor\, and warmth\, she shares stories of her own struggles with work\, family\, and the aftereffects of pandemic\, particularly feelings of overwhelm as the world rushes to reopen. Craving a different way to live\, May begins to explore the restorative properties of the natural world\, moving through the elements of earth\, water\, fire\, and air and identifying the quiet traces of magic that can be found only when we look for them. Through deliberate attention and ritual\, she unearths the potency and nourishment that come from quiet reconnection with our immediate environment. Blending lyricism and storytelling\, sensitivity and empathy\, Enchantment invites each of us to open the door to human experience in all its sensual complexity\, and to find the beauty waiting for us there.

SUMMARY:Pizza and a Movie featuring Bearer of the Morning
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with the La Crescent Public Library and Chickasaw Nation Productions! These family-friendly films showcase two incredible Chickasaw women whose trials and triumphs brought their culture into the mainstream spotlight. \nOur second feature is Bearer of the Morning. \nBorn in small-town Oklahoma\, Mary “Te Ata\,” Thompson Fisher was determined to pursue her passion as a performer. Supported by her undeniable charisma and oratorical talent\, Te Ata entertained and enlightened audiences across the world\, including royalty and statesmen. \nThroughout her travels and performances\, Te Ata kept her Chickasaw heritage close to heart and shared the unique story and of the Chickasaw people. By studying and performing traditional Native American stories\, she overturned negative stereotypes and advocated the preservation of Indigenous American cultures. As Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby noted\, “She is a shining example of the power of artistic expression to change hearts and minds.” In many ways\, Te Ata Fisher paved the way for Native Americans on stage and screen and remains a treasured voice for the Chickasaw people. \nPizza will be provided; drinks & additional food available for purchase. SUMMARY:Jury Duty: a True Crime Book Club discusses Yellow Bird
DESCRIPTION:Tell you’re friends you’re busy! You’ve got… JURY DUTY! \nOur latest pop-up book club theme is for fans of true crime shows\, podcasts\, and documentaries. Jury Duty\, a True Crime Book Club\, will host two reads this fall with our friends at Affogato Lane Coffee Co. (open after hours special for us!) and dive into the pages and cases of some notorious and high profile crimes. \nOur October selection is Yellow Bird: Oil\, Murder\, and a Woman’s Search for Justice in Indian Country by Sierra Crane Murdoch. Copies are available for checkout at the library desk; just ask! Food and drink will be available for purchase at the program. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nWhen Lissa Yellow Bird was released from prison in 2009\, she found her home\, the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota\, transformed by the Bakken oil boom. In her absence\, the landscape had been altered beyond recognition\, her tribal government swayed by corporate interests\, and her community burdened by a surge in violence and addiction. Three years later\, when Lissa learned that a young white oil worker\, Kristopher “KC” Clarke\, had disappeared from his reservation worksite\, she became particularly concerned. No one knew where Clarke had gone\, and few people were actively looking for him. \nYellow Bird traces Lissa’s steps as she obsessively hunts for clues to Clarke’s disappearance. She navigates two worlds–that of her own tribe\, changed by its newfound wealth\, and that of the non-Native oilmen\, down on their luck\, who have come to find work on the heels of the economic recession. Her pursuit of Clarke is also a pursuit of redemption\, as Lissa atones for her own crimes and reckons with generations of trauma.
