DESCRIPTION:Join Author John Armbruster for a presentation and Q&A about his book\, Tailspin\, the true story of a Wisconsin WWII veteran you won’t believe is real! John’s presentation includes video and images from his research. Books will be available for sale. \nAbout the book:\nIn November 1943\, in the skies over Nazi Germany\, a wounded American tail gunner\, Gene Moran\, lay in the severed tail of his Flying Fortress bomber. The mangled wreckage plunged four miles toward German soil. His parachute shredded by enemy fire\, Gene awaited the inevitable. \nThe cartwheeling tail section slammed into a forest and dumped Gene onto the cold ground. He was alive! Gene fell four miles without a parachute and survived. But his ordeal had just begun. In the next seventeen months\, Gene would endure some of the worst episodes of the American prisoner of war experience in occupied Europe\, including the infamous “Hell Ship” and European Death March. \nFor more than sixty years\, Gene said little about one of the most extraordinary stories of World War II until he met the author\, John Armbruster. John\, a close friend of the Moran family\, initially refused to write Gene’s story. Twenty years removed from a journalism degree and writing high school basketball stories for newspapers\, John couldn’t imagine taking on such significant work. But the author agreed to the project when one of Gene’s daughters told John\, “He’ll do it\, but only if you write it.” The journey of telling the story becomes a story itself. \nTailspin ​chronicles Gene’s unbelievable World War II survival saga. It will also show an elderly man finally coming to terms with the cruelties of a war that would haunt his entire life. \nThis program is sponsored by the La Crescent Public Library and the Friends of the La Crescent Public Library.

This talk goes beyond day-to-day life on trail—wildlife encounters\, fierce weather\, struggles in an enduring friendship\, a furry addition to the expedition team\, and a polar bear sighting—to ponder how we come to know and care for places threatened by rapidly changing physical\, social\, and cultural landscapes. Through music\, storytelling\, and poetry\, Natalie inspires listeners to consider: What can water teach us about interconnectivity? As harmful repercussions of human actions are unveiled\, what can water show us about resilience\, reciprocity\, and hope? Get excited for your next adventure with a desire to know\, feel\, and breathe the complex world around you. \nThis project has been funded by the people of Minnesota through the Arts and Cultural Heritage Library Legacy fund\, in cooperation with SELCO – our regional library system.

DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for a free\, family-friendly event this winter? The La Crescent Lions Club is hosting the first Frozen Apple Candlelight Hike on one of our wonderful La Crescent Trails.\nPark your car at Veterans Park and join us for a candlelight hike along the wooded Eagle Bluff Access Trail. The out and back hike will be less than a mile. If we have clear skies\, a near full moon will add to the winter glow. Warm up by the fire with a cup of hot cider or hot chocolate when you finish up. \nBefore you go:\n\nHike or bring your own snowshoes (sorry\, no cross-country skiing).\nBe safe – Dress appropriately for winter weather – especially sturdy boots.\nDogs not allowed for this hike. (ADA Service Animals are welcome)\nEvent may be canceled if extreme weather or icy conditions – watch Facebook for updates.\nThe Event is FREE – Donations will be accepted so we can grow the event in future years.
