DESCRIPTION:Join us to meet local author Sara Docan-Morgan and learn about her new book In Reunion. There will be a Q&A session\, her book will be on hand to purchase\, and all are welcome! We’d love to see you! \nSara Docan-Morgan (she/her) (PhD\, University of Washington) is Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Wisconsin\, La Crosse. Her research focuses on how personal and identities are formed and negotiated through messages in both adoptive and birth families. Her work has been published in scholarly articles and book chapters. She is a former Fulbright scholar to South Korea\, an award-winning teacher\, and a co-organizer of the International Symposium on Korean Adoption Studies. She lives with her family in La Crescent\, MN. \nIn In Reunion\, professor of communication studies Sara Docan-Morgan probes the basic notions of family\, adoption\, and parenthood by exploring initial meetings and ongoing relationships that transnational Korean adoptees have had with their birth parents and other birth family members. Drawing from qualitative interviews with adult Korean adoptees in the United States and Denmark\, as well as her own experiences as an adoptee\, Docan-Morgan illuminates the complexities of communication surrounding reunion.

DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in supporting Bluebirds for either yourself \, your children or your organization\, this seminar will give you the information\, resources and education you need to do so. \nJoni Welda is a Master Naturalist and a bluebirder for over 40 years. In the early 1990’s\, she was the La Crosse County Coordinator for the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin (BRAW) giving seminars and helping groups establish Bluebird trails. She was on the board of the Minnesota Bluebird Recovery Program (BBRP \, a member of the National Bluebird Society (NABS) and still is an avid Bluebirder today. She has successfully fledged thousands of bluebirds with the help of proper nestboxes\, good habitat and regular monitoring in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.

DESCRIPTION:On July 2nd\, 1937\, America’s favorite aviatrix\, Amelia Earhart and her navigator\, Fred Noonan went missing over the central Pacific Ocean. What happened to Amelia Earhart is one of the last great unsolved mysteries of the 20th century. \nPresenter Tom Vinson will cover some background on who Amelia Earhart was and what she was trying to accomplish when she disappeared\, as well as some of the Earhart Discovery Project expeditions to the Pacific. \nTom Vinson retired from Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids\, IA after 33 years in Engineering and Program Management. He and his wife\, Karen\, have lived in Chatfield\, MN since 2010. He serves on the board for Nauticos Corporation’s non-profit educational foundation\, SeaWord. Under SeaWord’s STEM initiatives\, Rockwell Collins supported Tom’s 2002\, 2006\, and 2017 Earhart expeditions. Since then\, Tom has provided many Earhart Search presentations to local schools\, civic and professional organizations\, and various amateur radio clubs.

DESCRIPTION:Come listen to the true story of Matoaka\, or as most people know her\, Pocahantas. She was the first documented MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women). We will watch a movie that has accurate information about her encounter with John Smith. \nMMIW is a widespread issue of violence against Indigenous People who go missing or are murdered. Our relatives do not get the nationwide coverage that they deserve. Often their disappearances and murders go unreported and unsolved. \nElizabeth Digby-Britten is Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe\, Bear Clan\, and German. She’s been married for over 20 years and has lived in La Crosse since 2005. She and her partner have two children. She’s a double alumni of UWL with a Bachelors in Art Education and a Master’s in Professional Development. She has worked in education for over 20 years in a variety of ways and has taught students ages 2-adult. Currently\, Elizabeth works for the YWCA as a Restorative Justice Coordinator. She is dedicated to social justice work and will continue to work for equality for all.

DESCRIPTION:Join the La Crescent Public Library and the Ho-Chunk Nation for an author talk with Cathy Coats about her new book\, To Banish Forever: A Secret Society\, the Ho-Chunk\, and Ethnic Cleansing in Minnesota. We will gather at the Ho-Chunk Nation Three Rivers House (724 Main St\, La Crosse) – food will be provided. Pearl Street Books will be selling copies of the book after the program. \nAbout the book: In 1863\, after the end of the US–Dakota War\, a group of white men living in Mankato formed a secret society\, the Knights of the Forest. At the beginning of every meeting\, members recited their ritual pledge: “I sincerely hope this meeting may be profitable to each one of us\, and that we may go forth from this Lodge stronger and braver in the determination to banish forever from our beautiful State every Indian who now desecrates our soil.” \nThe Ho-Chunk people\, who had not participated in the war\, occupied a reservation about two miles south of Mankato on some of the state’s richest agricultural lands. The Knights\, determined to claim these lands for their own profit\, advocated for the removal of the Ho-Chunk\, who had already been forced to move three times. Exploiting the fears of white people living in the area at the end of the brutal war\, the Knights sent armed men to surround the Ho-Chunk reservation\, threatening to shoot anyone who crossed the line. \nCathy Coats is a Metadata Specialist at the University of Minnesota Libraries\, Twin Cities. The book is published with the Minnesota Historical Society Press. This program is co-sponsored by the La Crescent Public Library and the La Crescent Area Historical Society in partnership with the Ho-Chunk Nation La Crosse Youth and Learning Center.

DESCRIPTION:Fun Night is ABLE’s largest fundraising event of the year with proceeds supporting our organization’s vision of an inclusive community where everyone belongs. Money raised is used for a variety of things to support the people at ABLE including outings\, supplies\, adaptive equipment and to pay for other necessities to help our people supported live full and vibrant lives. \nTickets are $25 per person and include entry into a drawing for one of two $250 cash prizes\, dinner\, keg beer and non-alcoholic beverages.\nTable sponsorships are $500 for a table of 8 and includes table signage at the event\, a pre-event Facebook post and recognition in any post event communications. In addition to being a physician\, Anna is a Certified Culinary Medicine Specialist with a plant-based nutrition certificate and has taught numerous Culinary Medicine classes locally. DESCRIPTION:MOVED TO FRIDAY\, MAY 3RD DUE TO WEATHER FORECAST. \nSana Illahe is a vocalist trained in Pakistani (Hindustani) tradition. She sings classical\, semi and folk classical songs from the tradition that are centuries old and are passed on to her orally by her music guru in Pakistan. She also plays instruments such as the harmonium\, surmandal and tanpura during her performances. In this concert\, she will be joined by Luke Thering on the piano with some of their original compositions. \nApart from song writing\, and composong\, Dr. Illahe teaches in the Race\, Gender and Sexuality Studies department of UW-La Crosse. \nLuke Thering is a composer and pianist based in La Crosse\, WI. In addition to solo piano compositions\, he has written scores for theatrical productions including ‘The Elephant Speaks Jazz’ (2022) and ‘Mop Dog’ (2016). He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Piano Performance & Music Theory / Composition from UW-La Crosse. \nThis program is sponsored by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund\, and is part of our La Crescent Community Read programming. SUMMARY:The Pulse of the Planet: Big Rivers and Their Role in Sustaining Life with Dean Klinkenberg
DESCRIPTION:Big rivers are one of nature’s greatest gifts\, yet we fundamentally misunderstand them. We see them as a threat when they run high\, but otherwise value them mostly for what we can move on top of them. Big rivers are complete systems that move and circulate water and nutrients\, creating and sustaining life from the smallest microorganisms to the largest predators. They work because the water\, trees\, grasses\, rocks\, and sand provide homes and sustenance for fish\, mammals\, rodents\, insects\, birds\, and so much more. We need big rivers\, for the life they create and sustain\, for their beauty\, for the sanctuary they offer from the stresses and demands of modern civilization. Big rivers also remind us that we are just one part of a big and complex world\, one that we need to take care of for our own survival. \nDean Klinkenberg is a St. Louis-based writer who focuses much of his writing and research on the Mississippi River. He has driven virtually all of the Great River Road\, hiked and canoed the river on multi-day expeditions\, and cruised on the American Queen steamboat as a guest lecturer. He is the author of the book “The Wild Mississippi: A State-by-State Guide to the River’s Natural Wonders”. Dean is a longtime partner in the Mississippi River Network (MRN)\, a coalition of organizations advocating for healthy and resilient river ecosystems.
