SUMMARY:Symphony Orchestra featuring H.S. Honor Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a powerful evening as the UWL Orchestra & Honor Orchestra present a concert in partnership with the Violins of Hope Wisconsin initiative. Central to the program is David Avshalomov’s “Elegy”\, a moving work for strings composed in memory of Leonard Bernstein—a slow\, soulful tribute blending lyrical depth and quiet intensity. \nThe inclusion of the Violins of Hope-Wisconsin project brings an added dimension of remembrance and resilience. A number of instruments from the collection will be on display at the concert venue. These restored instruments\, once played by Jewish musicians and others during the Holocaust\, carry with them stories of survival\, loss\, and enduring hope. \nTogether\, the concert offers not just musical excellence\, but a moment to reflect on history through sound—honoring lives lost\, celebrating the persistence of human spirit\, and inspiring connection across generations. Be a part of this occasion of memory\, empathy\, and beauty. \nFree & open to the public. \nProgram: \nHonor Orchestra \nSonata da Chiesa (1992) – Adolphus Hailstork (b.1941) \nArlington Sketches – Elliot Del Borgo (1938-2013) \nThat Which Remains – Stephen Melillo (b. 1957) \nLyric Metal – Brian Balmages (b. 1975) \nUWL Symphony Orchestra \nEgmont Overture – Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827) \nPraeludium and Allegro (1910) – Fritz Kreisler (1845-1924) \nDr. Michelle Elliott\, Violin \nElegy (1990) – David Avshalomov (b.1946) \n***Violins of Hope-Wisconsin Presentation*** \nBravado! (2024) – Gala Flagello (b.1994) \nUWL Symphony Orchestra \nLakay (2014) – Christopher Ducasse (b. 1993) \nCombined Honor Orchestra & UWL Symphony Orchestra

SUMMARY:Fifty Years Later Commemorating the End of the Secret War
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: October 20 – November 17\n1st Floor Lobby of the Lowe Center for the Arts\nDialogue Space (wall outside the UWL Art Gallery) \nJoin us for an exhibition commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Secret War in Laos and honoring the enduring strength of the Hmong and Lao people. Through the photographs of Ernest Kuhn and Galen Beery\, this collection reflects on loss\, resilience\, and remembrance in the aftermath of conflict. At its heart stands the Joss Paper Eagle\, a sculptural tribute crafted from ceremonial paper used in Hmong spiritual traditions to honor ancestors. As the mascot of the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse\, the eagle symbolizes vision\, strength\, and perseverance—qualities that here take on new meaning as a cultural offering to those who were lost. Together\, these works invite reflection on the lasting cost of war and the power of memory to heal\, connect\, and endure. \nThis exhibition was conceived and curated by Yia Vue\, whose research and creative work explore Hmong history\, war memory\, and the enduring legacies of conflict in Southeast Asia. Developed in collaboration with volunteer faculty and students\, the project brings together historical photography\, cultural symbolism\, and contemporary reflection. \nThis exhibition is made possible through the support of UWL’s Departments of Art\, Archaeology\, Theatre & Dance\, and Race\, Gender\, and Sexuality (RGS)\, as well as the office of Access\, Belonging\, and Compliance (ABC)\, and the La Crosse Historical Society\, among other partners dedicated to preserving and sharing these important histories.

SUMMARY:Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII: A Visible Veterans Program with Frederick Beseler
DESCRIPTION:Join the La Crescent Public Library and presenter Frederick Beseler to learn about the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of WWII. The WASPs were organized in order to provide pilots\, replacing the male pilots being sent overseas and into combat. The WASPs flew more than 60 million miles in every type of aircraft in the Army Air Forces inventory\, from biplane trainers to four-engine bombers and transports and 400-plus MPH fighters. The primary role of the WASPs was delivering the thousands of new aircraft from the factories to airfields around the United States — including Alaska — where the male pilots trained on those aircraft before taking them overseas. \nThis program is part of our Visible Veterans series\, and made possible thanks to a grant through SELCO and the MN Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. This grant is a collaboration between the La Crescent Public Library\, the La Crescent Area Historical Society\, the American Legion Post #595\, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #11542\, and the City of La Crescent.

SUMMARY:La Crosse New Music Festival Concert #1: (un)settled
DESCRIPTION:Join regional musicians for a celebration of New Music! Featuring innovative and experimental pieces by living composers\, this annual festival boasts four distinct concerts over the course of three days. This year’s theme draws on music and its connection to a sense of place\, which appears in various forms in every concert. \n(un)settled: Thursday November 6\, 7:30 p.m. \nOur first concert\, un(settled)\, features performances by members of the UWL Symphony Orchestra\, the UWL Wind Ensemble\, Alyssa Gaines on flute and piccolo\, students from Logan High School under the direction of Brian Renkas\, and UWL Professors Dr. Jonathan Borja and Dr. Mary Tollefson. All performances are free and open to the public\, no reservations required. \n(un)familiar: Friday November 7\, 7:30 p.m. \nExperience an evening of bold creativity at the second concert\, (un)familiar\, of the 2025 La Crosse New Music Festival featuring Chicago-based flutist Sasha Ishov. Ishov will perform works by composers he has worked with\, some of whom have recently passed. Delicate\, sensitive and innovative\, this program presents a range of colorful works and invites the audience to re-imagine virtuosity. All performances are free and open to the public\, no reservations required. \n(meta)physical: Saturday November 8 at 4 p.m. \nThe third concert of the 2025 La Crosse New Music Festival\, (meta)physical\, features spouses Eric Miller\, cello\, and Sue Ellen Dubbert\, pianist\, joined by violinist Leanne Kelso League. The program is made up of music by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt\, whose aesthetic draws on medieval and Renaissance music\, but more profoundly\, draws on his Orthodox Christian faith. Those who attend should expect a contemplative spirit\, echoing the 2024 festival’s theme of Minimalism. All performances are free and open to the public\, no reservations required. \nregion(less): Saturday November 8\, 7:30 p.m. \nFor our last concert\, region(less)\, we are excited to welcome Zeitgeist\, a long-established leader in contemporary music based just up the road in Redwing. Known for their daring programming and richly nuanced performances\, Zeitgeist explores where music is and where music can go. Experience sculpted soundscapes\, hypnotic rhythms\, and emotional intensity—an unforgettable concert of music by Midwestern composers. All performances are free and open to the public\, no reservations required.

SUMMARY:tick\, tick...BOOM!
DESCRIPTION:tick\, tick…BOOM!\nBy Jonathan Larson\nDirected by Nic Barilar \nOn the brink of his 30th birthday\, an aspiring musical theatre composer navigates love\, friendship\, and the pressure to create something great before time runs out. SUMMARY:Daniel Adam Maltz Fortepiano American Tour
DESCRIPTION:What: Daniel Adam Maltz Fortepiano Lecture-Recital\nWhen: November 13 at 7:30 p.m.\nWhere: Annett Recital Hall\, Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts\nAdmission: Free and open to the public.\nMore Info: Contact the Department of Music at 608.785.8409 \nUWL Music will host Daniel Adam Maltz\, a Vienna-based American fortepianist celebrated for his historically informed performances of Classical-era music\, for a two-day residency and public concert from November 13-14\, 2025. The visit is supported by an Eagle Visiting Scholar/Artist Grant and will include a public lecture-recital at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday\, November 13\, in Annett Recital Hall\, located in the Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts. \nMaltz performs on replicas of 18th-century Viennese fortepianos\, offering audiences the rare chance to hear the works of Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven as they might have sounded in the composers’ own time. For this residency\, he will bring his personal fortepiano to campus—an instrument not otherwise available in the region—making this a unique musical and educational opportunity for the UWL and La Crosse communities. \n“Having Daniel Adam Maltz on campus connects our students and audiences directly with the sound world of the Classical period\,” says Dr. Mary Tollefson\, Associate Professor of Music and residency organizer. “His artistry and scholarship will be a unique opportunity for our student-musicians to interact with an international artist\, and his visit will enrich the way we think about interpretation\, sound\, and musical meaning.” \nIn addition to his public concert\, Maltz will lead a voice and piano collaboration masterclass\, and a course lecture on Classical-era performance practice. His teaching focuses on how historical instruments and techniques illuminate the expressive intent behind Classical notation—an approach that blends musicology\, cultural history\, and performance. \nA graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London and the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna\, Maltz has performed across Europe\, North America\, and Asia\, and is host of the podcast Mozart Snapshots\, which explores performance traditions of the Classical era. \nEntry to the lecture-recital on November 13 is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Minnesota in Vietnam with Arn Kind: a Visible Veterans Project
DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. \nThe Vietnam War was the longest in American history\, costing the nation 56\,000 lives\, 300\,000 wounded\, 1\,200 missing\, and $141 billion. Who were the Vietnamese\, and what was their fight all about? How did the United States get into the war? What were the strategic\, diplomatic\, and domestic factors that determined the way we fought the war? Controversy continues to swirl around American involvement in the Vietnam conflict. \nMr. Arn Kind is a teacher with 48 years’ experience. Through multi-media presentations including artifacts\, videos\, music\, drama\, role-playing\, and living history experiences\, attendees will learn about the significance of the Vietnam War to American and Minnesota history. Artifacts include soldiers’ uniforms\, weapons\, and equipment. Weapons are non-firing reproductions that are safe to be handled and displayed. \nThis program is part of our Visible Veterans Series\, made possible with a grant through SELCO and the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund\, and in partnership with the City of La Crescent\, La Crescent Historical Society\, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 11542\, and American Legion Post 595.
