SUMMARY:Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII: A Visible Veterans Program with Frederick Beseler
DESCRIPTION:Join the La Crescent Public Library and presenter Frederick Beseler to learn about the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of WWII. The WASPs were organized in order to provide pilots\, replacing the male pilots being sent overseas and into combat. The WASPs flew more than 60 million miles in every type of aircraft in the Army Air Forces inventory\, from biplane trainers to four-engine bombers and transports and 400-plus MPH fighters. The primary role of the WASPs was delivering the thousands of new aircraft from the factories to airfields around the United States — including Alaska — where the male pilots trained on those aircraft before taking them overseas. \nThis program is part of our Visible Veterans series\, and made possible thanks to a grant through SELCO and the MN Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. This grant is a collaboration between the La Crescent Public Library\, the La Crescent Area Historical Society\, the American Legion Post #595\, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #11542\, and the City of La Crescent.

This year’s theme draws on music and its connection to a sense of place\, which appears in various forms in every concert. \n(un)settled: Thursday November 6\, 7:30 p.m. \nOur first concert\, un(settled)\, features performances by members of the UWL Symphony Orchestra\, the UWL Wind Ensemble\, Alyssa Gaines on flute and piccolo\, students from Logan High School under the direction of Brian Renkas\, and UWL Professors Dr. Jonathan Borja and Dr. Mary Tollefson. All performances are free and open to the public\, no reservations required. \n(un)familiar: Friday November 7\, 7:30 p.m. \nExperience an evening of bold creativity at the second concert\, (un)familiar\, of the 2025 La Crosse New Music Festival featuring Chicago-based flutist Sasha Ishov. Ishov will perform works by composers he has worked with\, some of whom have recently passed. Delicate\, sensitive and innovative\, this program presents a range of colorful works and invites the audience to re-imagine virtuosity. All performances are free and open to the public\, no reservations required. \n(meta)physical: Saturday November 8 at 4 p.m. \nThe third concert of the 2025 La Crosse New Music Festival\, (meta)physical\, features spouses Eric Miller\, cello\, and Sue Ellen Dubbert\, pianist\, joined by violinist Leanne Kelso League. The program is made up of music by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt\, whose aesthetic draws on medieval and Renaissance music\, but more profoundly\, draws on his Orthodox Christian faith. Those who attend should expect a contemplative spirit\, echoing the 2024 festival’s theme of Minimalism. The visit is supported by an Eagle Visiting Scholar/Artist Grant and will include a public lecture-recital at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday\, November 13\, in Annett Recital Hall\, located in the Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts. \nMaltz performs on replicas of 18th-century Viennese fortepianos\, offering audiences the rare chance to hear the works of Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven as they might have sounded in the composers’ own time. For this residency\, he will bring his personal fortepiano to campus—an instrument not otherwise available in the region—making this a unique musical and educational opportunity for the UWL and La Crosse communities. \n“Having Daniel Adam Maltz on campus connects our students and audiences directly with the sound world of the Classical period\,” says Dr. Mary Tollefson\, Associate Professor of Music and residency organizer. “His artistry and scholarship will be a unique opportunity for our student-musicians to interact with an international artist\, and his visit will enrich the way we think about interpretation\, sound\, and musical meaning.” \nIn addition to his public concert\, Maltz will lead a voice and piano collaboration masterclass\, and a course lecture on Classical-era performance practice. Controversy continues to swirl around American involvement in the Vietnam conflict. \nMr. Arn Kind is a teacher with 48 years’ experience. Through multi-media presentations including artifacts\, videos\, music\, drama\, role-playing\, and living history experiences\, attendees will learn about the significance of the Vietnam War to American and Minnesota history. Artifacts include soldiers’ uniforms\, weapons\, and equipment. The Brownsville Overlook is located about three miles south of Brownsville\, Minnesota along Minnesota Highway 26. DESCRIPTION:Kicking off our 31st year on Nov 28\, 2025\nThis year\, 2025\, we are celebrating our 31st year with our Rotary Lights Display at Riverside Park. \nNearly 130\,000 visitors per year enjoy this holiday tradition while driving\, walking or taking a carriage ride through Riverside Park. Join us for the opening night parade at 5pm immediately followed by our opening ceremony and fireworks on opening night\, November 28. Santa and a couple of his reindeer will be in the park every night through December 23. The Live Nativity\, Carriage rides\, Hay rides\, and Chili Revolution will be available on select nights. Free s’mores are available every night near the giant snowman. All Abilities Night returns on Monday\, December 1st from 5-8pm. We will be adjusting the lights and music to accommodate individuals that may not have been able to experience the show in the past due to flashing lights and loud music. The ice rink and free skate rental will be available to use when the weather allows. With over 3\,000\,000 lights\, you can imagine the breadth and depth of this holiday display.
