SUMMARY:The Pulse of the Planet: Big Rivers and Their Role in Sustaining Life with Dean Klinkenberg
DESCRIPTION:Big rivers are one of nature’s greatest gifts\, yet we fundamentally misunderstand them. We see them as a threat when they run high\, but otherwise value them mostly for what we can move on top of them. Big rivers are complete systems that move and circulate water and nutrients\, creating and sustaining life from the smallest microorganisms to the largest predators. They work because the water\, trees\, grasses\, rocks\, and sand provide homes and sustenance for fish\, mammals\, rodents\, insects\, birds\, and so much more. We need big rivers\, for the life they create and sustain\, for their beauty\, for the sanctuary they offer from the stresses and demands of modern civilization. Big rivers also remind us that we are just one part of a big and complex world\, one that we need to take care of for our own survival. \nDean Klinkenberg is a St. Louis-based writer who focuses much of his writing and research on the Mississippi River. He has driven virtually all of the Great River Road\, hiked and canoed the river on multi-day expeditions\, and cruised on the American Queen steamboat as a guest lecturer. He is the author of the book “The Wild Mississippi: A State-by-State Guide to the River’s Natural Wonders”. Dean is a longtime partner in the Mississippi River Network (MRN)\, a coalition of organizations advocating for healthy and resilient river ecosystems.

SUMMARY:La Crescent Community Read - Under the Tamarind Tree
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our La Crescent Community Read! Featuring Minnesota author\, Nigar Alam\, we’re giving away 50 copies of “Under the Tamarind Tree.” Nab yours at the library or check one out with your library card! \nFind programs featuring Indian and Pakistani culture\, join us May 25th for a visit with the author\, and come to one of our book clubs at the library on May 20th at 10am or 6pm. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nOne night. Four friends. Countless secrets. \n1964. Karachi\, Pakistan. Rozeena is running out of time. She’ll lose her home—her parents’ safe haven since fleeing India and the terrors of Partition—if her medical career doesn’t take off soon. But success may come with an unexpected price. Meanwhile the interwoven lives of her childhood best friends—Haaris\, Aalya\, and Zohair—seem to be unraveling with each passing day. The once small and inconsequential differences between their families’ social standing now threaten to divide them. Then one fateful night someone ends up dead and the life they once took for granted shatters. \n2019. Rozeena receives a call from a voice she never thought she’d hear again. What begins as an ask to look after a friend’s teenaged granddaughter struggling with her own demons grows into an unconventional friendship—one that unearths buried secrets and just might ruin everything Rozeena has worked so hard to protect. \nCaptivating and atmospheric\, Under the Tamarind Tree shows us the high-stakes ripple effects of generational trauma\, and the lengths people will go to protect the ones they love. \n*** \nThis community read is sponsored by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund\, along with the SELCO system.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Cathy Coats
DESCRIPTION:Join the La Crescent Public Library and the Ho-Chunk Nation for an author talk with Cathy Coats about her new book\, To Banish Forever: A Secret Society\, the Ho-Chunk\, and Ethnic Cleansing in Minnesota. We will gather at the Ho-Chunk Nation Three Rivers House (724 Main St\, La Crosse) – food will be provided. Pearl Street Books will be selling copies of the book after the program. \nAbout the book: In 1863\, after the end of the US–Dakota War\, a group of white men living in Mankato formed a secret society\, the Knights of the Forest. At the beginning of every meeting\, members recited their ritual pledge: “I sincerely hope this meeting may be profitable to each one of us\, and that we may go forth from this Lodge stronger and braver in the determination to banish forever from our beautiful State every Indian who now desecrates our soil.” \nThe Ho-Chunk people\, who had not participated in the war\, occupied a reservation about two miles south of Mankato on some of the state’s richest agricultural lands. The Knights\, determined to claim these lands for their own profit\, advocated for the removal of the Ho-Chunk\, who had already been forced to move three times. Exploiting the fears of white people living in the area at the end of the brutal war\, the Knights sent armed men to surround the Ho-Chunk reservation\, threatening to shoot anyone who crossed the line. \nCathy Coats is a Metadata Specialist at the University of Minnesota Libraries\, Twin Cities. The book is published with the Minnesota Historical Society Press. This program is co-sponsored by the La Crescent Public Library and the La Crescent Area Historical Society in partnership with the Ho-Chunk Nation La Crosse Youth and Learning Center.

SUMMARY:Take Me To Your Reader: a Sci-Fi Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Take Me To Your Reader! Join us for another pop-up book club\, this time featuring Sci-Fi! Our March selection is The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nThere lived a girl named Petra Peña\, who wanted nothing more than to be a storyteller\, like her abuelita. \nBut Petra’s world is ending. Earth has been destroyed by a comet\, and only a few hundred scientists and their children – among them Petra and her family – have been chosen to journey to a new planet. They are the ones who must carry on the human race. \nHundreds of years later\, Petra wakes to this new planet – and the discovery that she is the only person who remembers Earth. A sinister Collective has taken over the ship during its journey\, bent on erasing the sins of humanity’s past. They have systematically purged the memories of all aboard – or purged them altogether. \nPetra alone now carries the stories of our past\, and with them\, any hope for our future. Can she make them live again?

SUMMARY:Take Me To Your Reader: a Sci-Fi Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Take Me To Your Reader! Join us for another pop-up book club\, this time featuring Sci-Fi! Our February selection is sci-fi classic\, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nSeconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway\, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect\, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who\, for the last fifteen years\, has been posing as an out-of-work actor. \nTogether this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”) and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox–the two-headed\, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian\, Zaphod’s girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan)\, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin\, a paranoid\, brilliant\, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig\, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years. \nWhere are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don’t forget to bring a towel!

SUMMARY:Shelf Care: a Pop-Up Book Club for the New Year
DESCRIPTION:Join La Crescent Public Library and Franciscan Spirituality Center for some Shelf Care! Our January pop-up book club is reading and discussing “Enchantment: Awaking Wonder in an Anxious Age” by Katherine May. We’ll start the group with a grounding exercise to shed the hectic-ness of the day\, discuss Katherine May’s book and ways we find “enchantment” in the world\, and all attendees will have the opportunity to engage their senses through meditations with the elements. Coffee and tea will be provided in this relaxing meetup for those looking to add more enchantment to their everyday life. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nMany of us feel trapped in a grind of constant change: rolling news cycles\, the chatter of social media\, our families split along partisan lines. We feel fearful and tired\, on edge in our bodies\, not quite knowing what has us perpetually depleted. For Katherine May\, this low hum of fatigue and anxiety made her wonder what she was missing. Could there be a different way to relate to the world\, one that would allow her to feel more rested and at ease\, even as seismic changes unfold on the planet? Might there be a way for all of us to move through life with curiosity and tenderness\, sensitized to the subtle magic all around? \nIn Enchantment\, May invites the reader to come with her on a journey to reawaken our innate sense of wonder and awe. With humor\, candor\, and warmth\, she shares stories of her own struggles with work\, family\, and the aftereffects of pandemic\, particularly feelings of overwhelm as the world rushes to reopen. Craving a different way to live\, May begins to explore the restorative properties of the natural world\, moving through the elements of earth\, water\, fire\, and air and identifying the quiet traces of magic that can be found only when we look for them. Through deliberate attention and ritual\, she unearths the potency and nourishment that come from quiet reconnection with our immediate environment. Blending lyricism and storytelling\, sensitivity and empathy\, Enchantment invites each of us to open the door to human experience in all its sensual complexity\, and to find the beauty waiting for us there.
