SUMMARY:Minnesota in Vietnam with Arn Kind: a Visible Veterans Project

Who were the Vietnamese\, and what was their fight all about? How did the United States get into the war? What were the strategic\, diplomatic\, and domestic factors that determined the way we fought the war? Controversy continues to swirl around American involvement in the Vietnam conflict. \nMr. Arn Kind is a teacher with 48 years’ experience. SUMMARY:Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII: A Visible Veterans Program with Frederick Beseler
DESCRIPTION:Join the La Crescent Public Library and presenter Frederick Beseler to learn about the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of WWII. The WASPs were organized in order to provide pilots\, replacing the male pilots being sent overseas and into combat. The WASPs flew more than 60 million miles in every type of aircraft in the Army Air Forces inventory\, from biplane trainers to four-engine bombers and transports and 400-plus MPH fighters. The primary role of the WASPs was delivering the thousands of new aircraft from the factories to airfields around the United States — including Alaska — where the male pilots trained on those aircraft before taking them overseas. \nThis program is part of our Visible Veterans series\, and made possible thanks to a grant through SELCO and the MN Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. This grant is a collaboration between the La Crescent Public Library\, the La Crescent Area Historical Society\, the American Legion Post #595\, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #11542\, and the City of La Crescent.

DESCRIPTION:Join the library for our latest pop-up book club featuring romance reads and craft time! We’ll have book discussion and craft time over your beverage of choice. Bring a project you’ve been working on\, or peruse idea books from the library and coloring pages. Our July selection is “How to End a Love Story” by Yulin Kuang. Please support our business partner if you are able. Snacks/food are welcome while we meet. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nHelen Zhang hasn’t seen Grant Shepard once in the thirteen years since the tragic accident that bound their lives together forever. Now a bestselling author\, Helen pours everything into her career. She’s even scored a coveted spot in the writers’ room of the TV adaptation of her popular young adult novels\, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome and overcome her writer’s block\, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too. LA is the fresh start she needs. After all\, no one knows her there. \nExcept… Grant has done everything in his power to move on from the past\, including building a life across the country. And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away\, he’s well liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows he shouldn’t have taken the job on Helen’s show\, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can’t pass up. Grant’s exactly as Helen remembers him—charming\, funny\, popular\, and lovable in ways that she’s never been. And Helen’s exactly as Grant remembers too—brilliant\, beautiful\, closed off. But working together is messy\, and electrifying\, and Helen’s parents\, who have never forgiven Grant\, have no idea he’s in the picture at all. When secrets come to light\, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story. And yet… the key to making peace with their past—and themselves—might just lie in holding on to each other in the present.

SUMMARY:Match-Makers Book Club: Drunk on Love
DESCRIPTION:Join the library for our latest pop-up book club featuring romance reads and craft time! We’ll have book discussion and craft time over your beverage of choice. Bring a project you’ve been working on\, or peruse idea books from the library and coloring pages. Our July selection is “Drunk on Love” by Jasmine Guillory. Place your hold or ask at the circulation desk for a copy today! \nWe’ll meet at Bluff Top Vineyard rain or shine (27168 Bauer Rd\, Winona\, MN 55987)\, just a 16 minute drive from La Crescent Library. Please support our business partner if you are able. Snacks/food are welcome while we meet. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nMargot Noble needs some relief from the stress of running the family winery with her brother. Enter Luke: sexy\, charming\, and best of all in the too-small world of Napa\, a stranger. The chemistry between them is undeniable\, and Margot is delighted that she lucked into the perfect one-night stand she’ll never have to see again. That is\, until the winery’s newest hire\, Luke\, walks in the next morning. Margot is determined to keep things purely professional\, but when their every interaction reminds her of the attraction still bubbling between them\, it proves to be much more challenging than she expects. \nLuke Williams had it all\, but when he quits his high-salary tech job in Silicon Valley in a blaze of burnout and moves back to Napa to help a friend\, he realizes he doesn’t want to tell the world–or his mom–why he’s now working at a winery. His mom loves bragging about her successful son–how can he admit that the job she’s so proud of broke him? Luke has no idea what is next for him\, but one thing is certain: he wants more from the incredibly smart and sexy woman he hooked up with–even after he learns she’s his new boss. But even if they can find a way to be together that wouldn’t be an ethical nightmare\, would such a successful woman really want a tech-world dropout? Set against a lush backdrop of Napa Valley wine country\, nothing goes to your head as fast as a taste of love–even if it means changing all your plans.

Their curses will cancel each other’s out\, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work. \nEmma hadn’t planned that her next assignment as a traveling nurse would be in Minnesota\, but she and her best friend agree that dating Justin is too good of an opportunity to pass up\, especially when they get to rent an adorable cottage on a private island on Lake Minnetonka. It’s supposed to be a quick fling\, just for the summer. But when Emma’s toxic mother shows up and Justin has to assume guardianship of his three siblings\, they’re suddenly navigating a lot more than they expected–including catching real feelings for each other. What if this time Fate has actually brought the perfect pair together?

SUMMARY:The Myth of Neutrality in Museums and Archives
DESCRIPTION:Museums and archives today have to reckon with their institutional history and historical narratives that put the Western world and norms as the default. People who work in the Archives field have a saying for this: “Archives Are Not Neutral\,” which tries to address the fact that there are inherent biases in archives\, and no history or record-keeping is neutral. Join us for this talk by La Crosse Public Library Archives librarian Jenny DeRocher\, who will talk about the history of our museums and archives\, and what it means locally to be active participants in rejecting how our cultural heritage is preserved and talked about. \nPart of our La Crescent Community Read program series.
