SUMMARY:The Great North Star Read Together
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 20th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM libraries across Minnesota will host The Great North Star Read Together\, a statewide celebration of the heart of every community: our libraries. Users of all types of libraries are asked to drop in and read to show that Minnesotans are library supporters! We’ll have coffee\, tea\, and donuts provided. And relaxing harp music by a local musician! \nThis all-ages event invites Minnesotans to show up\, settle in\, and support their local libraries by doing something simple and powerful—reading. Whether it’s five minutes or the full two hours\, readers are encouraged to bring a book\, grab a chair\, and help shine a spotlight on the vital roles libraries play in our lives. \nWhy? Because libraries are more than buildings and bestsellers. They’re gathering spots\, learning hubs for everyone\, safe spaces\, and cornerstones for informed\, thriving communities. This statewide ‘read-in is a joyful way to show that we see—and need—our libraries.\nEncourage your community friends to show up and read and celebrate our libraries! \nLet’s remind Minnesota what libraries make possible.\nLet’s fill the state with readers on September 20!

SUMMARY:Match-Makers Book Club: How to End a Love Story
DESCRIPTION:Join the library for our latest pop-up book club featuring romance reads and craft time! We’ll have book discussion and craft time over your beverage of choice. Bring a project you’ve been working on\, or peruse idea books from the library and coloring pages. Our July selection is “How to End a Love Story” by Yulin Kuang. Please support our business partner if you are able. Snacks/food are welcome while we meet. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nHelen Zhang hasn’t seen Grant Shepard once in the thirteen years since the tragic accident that bound their lives together forever. Now a bestselling author\, Helen pours everything into her career. She’s even scored a coveted spot in the writers’ room of the TV adaptation of her popular young adult novels\, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome and overcome her writer’s block\, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too. LA is the fresh start she needs. After all\, no one knows her there. \nExcept… Grant has done everything in his power to move on from the past\, including building a life across the country. And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away\, he’s well liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows he shouldn’t have taken the job on Helen’s show\, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can’t pass up. Grant’s exactly as Helen remembers him—charming\, funny\, popular\, and lovable in ways that she’s never been. And Helen’s exactly as Grant remembers too—brilliant\, beautiful\, closed off. But working together is messy\, and electrifying\, and Helen’s parents\, who have never forgiven Grant\, have no idea he’s in the picture at all. When secrets come to light\, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story. And yet… the key to making peace with their past—and themselves—might just lie in holding on to each other in the present.

SUMMARY:Match-Makers Book Club: Drunk on Love
DESCRIPTION:Join the library for our latest pop-up book club featuring romance reads and craft time! We’ll have book discussion and craft time over your beverage of choice. Bring a project you’ve been working on\, or peruse idea books from the library and coloring pages. Our July selection is “Drunk on Love” by Jasmine Guillory. Place your hold or ask at the circulation desk for a copy today! \nWe’ll meet at Bluff Top Vineyard rain or shine (27168 Bauer Rd\, Winona\, MN 55987)\, just a 16 minute drive from La Crescent Library. Please support our business partner if you are able. Snacks/food are welcome while we meet. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nMargot Noble needs some relief from the stress of running the family winery with her brother. Enter Luke: sexy\, charming\, and best of all in the too-small world of Napa\, a stranger. The chemistry between them is undeniable\, and Margot is delighted that she lucked into the perfect one-night stand she’ll never have to see again. That is\, until the winery’s newest hire\, Luke\, walks in the next morning. Margot is determined to keep things purely professional\, but when their every interaction reminds her of the attraction still bubbling between them\, it proves to be much more challenging than she expects. \nLuke Williams had it all\, but when he quits his high-salary tech job in Silicon Valley in a blaze of burnout and moves back to Napa to help a friend\, he realizes he doesn’t want to tell the world–or his mom–why he’s now working at a winery. His mom loves bragging about her successful son–how can he admit that the job she’s so proud of broke him? Luke has no idea what is next for him\, but one thing is certain: he wants more from the incredibly smart and sexy woman he hooked up with–even after he learns she’s his new boss. But even if they can find a way to be together that wouldn’t be an ethical nightmare\, would such a successful woman really want a tech-world dropout? Set against a lush backdrop of Napa Valley wine country\, nothing goes to your head as fast as a taste of love–even if it means changing all your plans.

SUMMARY:Match-Makers Book Club: Just for the Summer
DESCRIPTION:Join the library for our latest pop-up book club featuring romance reads and craft time! We’ll have book discussion and craft time over your beverage of choice. Bring a project you’ve been working on\, or peruse idea books from the library and coloring pages. Our June selection is “Just for the Summer” by Abby Jimenez. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nJustin has a curse\, and thanks to a Reddit thread\, it’s now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem\, they come up with a plan: They’ll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out\, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work. \nEmma hadn’t planned that her next assignment as a traveling nurse would be in Minnesota\, but she and her best friend agree that dating Justin is too good of an opportunity to pass up\, especially when they get to rent an adorable cottage on a private island on Lake Minnetonka. It’s supposed to be a quick fling\, just for the summer. But when Emma’s toxic mother shows up and Justin has to assume guardianship of his three siblings\, they’re suddenly navigating a lot more than they expected–including catching real feelings for each other. What if this time Fate has actually brought the perfect pair together?

SUMMARY:Interactive Papermaking & Native Prairie Planting with Paper Plains
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the City Lot behind the Library! Paper Plains invites the community to create paper from regionally-harvested\, invasive plants. It is an interactive experience in papermaking and native prairie planting. SUMMARY:The Myth of Neutrality in Museums and Archives
DESCRIPTION:Museums and archives today have to reckon with their institutional history and historical narratives that put the Western world and norms as the default. People who work in the Archives field have a saying for this: “Archives Are Not Neutral\,” which tries to address the fact that there are inherent biases in archives\, and no history or record-keeping is neutral. Join us for this talk by La Crosse Public Library Archives librarian Jenny DeRocher\, who will talk about the history of our museums and archives\, and what it means locally to be active participants in rejecting how our cultural heritage is preserved and talked about. \nPart of our La Crescent Community Read program series. Join us in further exploration and discussion around Nature\, History\, Identity\, and Discovery.

SUMMARY:Pushing the River: A Conversation with Frank Bures and Judson Steinbeck
DESCRIPTION:Join La Crescent Public Library for a conversation with author Frank Bures and his friend Judson Steinback about Frank’s new book PUSHING THE RIVER. \nAbout the book:\nA collection of true stories as varied as the waters\, weather\, and rhythms of a canoe trip. From the terror of two kayakers who barely escaped the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire in the Boundary Waters to two young campers who experienced a supernatural scare in Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park in the 1970s to the author’s own miraculous rescue\, Bures shares varied takes on what happens when you push the river.\nThe heart of the book is a telling of the lost history of the Paul Bunyan Canoe Derby\, an annual 450-mile race run on the Upper Mississippi in the 1940s and 1950s that gave canoe-racing legend Gene Jensen his start—and which changed the course of modern canoeing. The tale includes the dominance of racers from the Leech Lake Indian Reservation\, including many members of the Tibbets family\, and the unacknowledged contributions of Ojibwe canoe builders Jim and Bernie Smith\, whose design features are now part of the modern canoe-racing landscape. \nFrank Bures is an award-winning author whose work has appeared in many publications. Originally from Winona\, he now lives in Minneapolis and works as the editor of UNDER PURPLE SKIES: THE MINNEAPOLIS ANTHOLOGY. He has also served on the support crews for the 2021 and 2023 Guinness World Record teams for paddling the the Mississippi River. \nJudson Steinback developed his love of paddling while fishing with his family and friends as a child. He has competed in and won numerous paddling races throughout the world\, and is currently one of four teammates who hold the Guinness World Record for the “Fastest Team to Paddle the Length of the Mississippi River.” Judd organizes the Goose Island Grind\, a local paddle race in La Crosse.

SUMMARY:Dodge County\, Inc: Big Ag and the Undoing of Rural America – Author Talk with Sonja Trom Eayrs
DESCRIPTION:Join the La Crescent Public Library for a talk with Sonja Trom Eayrs about her book Dodge County\, Inc: Big Ag and the Undoing of Rural America. The Trom family has farmed in Dodge County\, MN for generations\, but in the mid-90s\, Dodge’s livestock farmers became ensnared in contracts with corporations like Tyson\, Hormel\, JBS\, and Smithfield Foods. This was the beginning of a perilous journey as a generation of small farmers was squeezed out of the market. \nSonja Trom Eayrs is an author\, an attorney\, the business manager for the Trom family farm\, and is involved in several rural advocacy organizations. Through Dodge County\, Incorporated\, Sonja recounts her family’s litigation against the Dodge County board to prevent a corporate factory farm from going up across the road from the family farm. She weaves her family’s struggle to fight corporate injustices in rural America with the larger story of corporate livestock production in the United States.
