DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, women were excluded from art academies\, life drawing classes\, and the career of professional artist. Even so\, many women still found ways to learn to paint and much of their work is being rediscovered in our day. \nIn this virtual talk\, award-winning author Erin Bartels will outline the life and work of four female artists in France in the late 1800s who\, while contemporaries of one another\, approached their art and their lives in different ways as they attempted to navigate societal restrictions and cultural expectations of what women should do and what they were even capable of doing. Then she’ll bring the issue into the present\, unpacking the ways we all tend to restrict ourselves from creating and sharing our creations today\, despite the fact that societal norms have changed and we enjoy unprecedented freedom to choose. Hollars answered a call from his father-in-law while teaching. “When will you be home?” Steve asked. “I have news.”\nSo began the Hollars family’s year of plenty—a cancer diagnosis on top of the ongoing COVID pandemic\, then feelings of falling short as parents\, partners\, and people. While Hollars traces his family’s daily devastations alongside his father-in-law’s decline\, he recounts the small mercies along the way: birthdays\, campfires\, fishing trips\, kayaking\, and fireflies. As he\, his wife\, Meredith\, and their three young children grapple with how best to say goodbye to the person they love\, they are forced to reassess their own lives. His visit is part of the Minnesota Author Tour. \nChristopher P. Lehman is a professor of Ethnic Studies at St. Cloud State University. He has been a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research. His work has appeared in Minnesota History magazine and in periodicals for county-level historical societies throughout Minnesota. His book Slavery’s Reach: Southern Slaveholders in the North Star State won the Minnesota Book Award in the Minnesota Nonfiction category in 2020. His newest release It Took Courage: Eliza Winston’s Quest for Freedom chronicles the incredible true story of Eliza Winston\, an enslaved woman from Mississippi who found her way to Minnesota and petitioned for her freedom in court in 1860 — and won. \nFollowing the program\, there will be a book signing and books will be available for purchase thanks to Pearl Street Books. \nThis program is sponsored by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and by the SELCO Library System.

SUMMARY:The Pulse of the Planet: Big Rivers and Their Role in Sustaining Life with Dean Klinkenberg
DESCRIPTION:Big rivers are one of nature’s greatest gifts\, yet we fundamentally misunderstand them. We see them as a threat when they run high\, but otherwise value them mostly for what we can move on top of them. Big rivers are complete systems that move and circulate water and nutrients\, creating and sustaining life from the smallest microorganisms to the largest predators. They work because the water\, trees\, grasses\, rocks\, and sand provide homes and sustenance for fish\, mammals\, rodents\, insects\, birds\, and so much more. We need big rivers\, for the life they create and sustain\, for their beauty\, for the sanctuary they offer from the stresses and demands of modern civilization. Big rivers also remind us that we are just one part of a big and complex world\, one that we need to take care of for our own survival. \nDean Klinkenberg is a St. Louis-based writer who focuses much of his writing and research on the Mississippi River. He has driven virtually all of the Great River Road\, hiked and canoed the river on multi-day expeditions\, and cruised on the American Queen steamboat as a guest lecturer. He is the author of the book “The Wild Mississippi: A State-by-State Guide to the River’s Natural Wonders”. Dean is a longtime partner in the Mississippi River Network (MRN)\, a coalition of organizations advocating for healthy and resilient river ecosystems.

DESCRIPTION:MOVED TO FRIDAY\, MAY 3RD DUE TO WEATHER FORECAST. \nSana Illahe is a vocalist trained in Pakistani (Hindustani) tradition. She sings classical\, semi and folk classical songs from the tradition that are centuries old and are passed on to her orally by her music guru in Pakistan. She also plays instruments such as the harmonium\, surmandal and tanpura during her performances. In this concert\, she will be joined by Luke Thering on the piano with some of their original compositions. \nApart from song writing\, and composong\, Dr. Illahe teaches in the Race\, Gender and Sexuality Studies department of UW-La Crosse. \nLuke Thering is a composer and pianist based in La Crosse\, WI. In addition to solo piano compositions\, he has written scores for theatrical productions including ‘The Elephant Speaks Jazz’ (2022) and ‘Mop Dog’ (2016). He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Piano Performance & Music Theory / Composition from UW-La Crosse. \nThis program is sponsored by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund\, and is part of our La Crescent Community Read programming. DESCRIPTION:Join the La Crescent Public Library and the Ho-Chunk Nation for an author talk with Cathy Coats about her new book\, To Banish Forever: A Secret Society\, the Ho-Chunk\, and Ethnic Cleansing in Minnesota. We will gather at the Ho-Chunk Nation Three Rivers House (724 Main St\, La Crosse) – food will be provided. Pearl Street Books will be selling copies of the book after the program. \nAbout the book: In 1863\, after the end of the US–Dakota War\, a group of white men living in Mankato formed a secret society\, the Knights of the Forest. At the beginning of every meeting\, members recited their ritual pledge: “I sincerely hope this meeting may be profitable to each one of us\, and that we may go forth from this Lodge stronger and braver in the determination to banish forever from our beautiful State every Indian who now desecrates our soil.” \nThe Ho-Chunk people\, who had not participated in the war\, occupied a reservation about two miles south of Mankato on some of the state’s richest agricultural lands. The Knights\, determined to claim these lands for their own profit\, advocated for the removal of the Ho-Chunk\, who had already been forced to move three times. Exploiting the fears of white people living in the area at the end of the brutal war\, the Knights sent armed men to surround the Ho-Chunk reservation\, threatening to shoot anyone who crossed the line. \nCathy Coats is a Metadata Specialist at the University of Minnesota Libraries\, Twin Cities. The book is published with the Minnesota Historical Society Press. This program is co-sponsored by the La Crescent Public Library and the La Crescent Area Historical Society in partnership with the Ho-Chunk Nation La Crosse Youth and Learning Center.

DESCRIPTION:Come listen to the true story of Matoaka\, or as most people know her\, Pocahantas. She was the first documented MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women). We will watch a movie that has accurate information about her encounter with John Smith. \nMMIW is a widespread issue of violence against Indigenous People who go missing or are murdered. Our relatives do not get the nationwide coverage that they deserve. Often their disappearances and murders go unreported and unsolved. \nElizabeth Digby-Britten is Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe\, Bear Clan\, and German. She’s been married for over 20 years and has lived in La Crosse since 2005. She and her partner have two children. She’s a double alumni of UWL with a Bachelors in Art Education and a Master’s in Professional Development. She has worked in education for over 20 years in a variety of ways and has taught students ages 2-adult. Currently\, Elizabeth works for the YWCA as a Restorative Justice Coordinator. She is dedicated to social justice work and will continue to work for equality for all.
