DESCRIPTION:Born and raised near Minneapolis\, author Kent Nerburn went on to the University of Minnesota for American Studies\, then to several post-graduate studies in Religion\, Humanities\, and Art. He worked for several years on the Red Lake Ojibwe reservation\, helping students collect the memories of the tribal elders. DESCRIPTION:Join the La Crescent Public Library for a talk with Sonja Trom Eayrs about her book Dodge County\, Inc: Big Ag and the Undoing of Rural America. The Trom family has farmed in Dodge County\, MN for generations\, but in the mid-90s\, Dodge’s livestock farmers became ensnared in contracts with corporations like Tyson\, Hormel\, JBS\, and Smithfield Foods. This was the beginning of a perilous journey as a generation of small farmers was squeezed out of the market. \nSonja Trom Eayrs is an author\, an attorney\, the business manager for the Trom family farm\, and is involved in several rural advocacy organizations. Through Dodge County\, Incorporated\, Sonja recounts her family’s litigation against the Dodge County board to prevent a corporate factory farm from going up across the road from the family farm. She weaves her family’s struggle to fight corporate injustices in rural America with the larger story of corporate livestock production in the United States.

DESCRIPTION:The La Crescent Public Library is THRILLED to host Dr. Christopher Lehman on Saturday\, June 29th at 11am at the Community Building. His visit is part of the Minnesota Author Tour. \nChristopher P. Lehman is a professor of Ethnic Studies at St. Cloud State University. He has been a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research. His work has appeared in Minnesota History magazine and in periodicals for county-level historical societies throughout Minnesota. His book Slavery’s Reach: Southern Slaveholders in the North Star State won the Minnesota Book Award in the Minnesota Nonfiction category in 2020. His newest release It Took Courage: Eliza Winston’s Quest for Freedom chronicles the incredible true story of Eliza Winston\, an enslaved woman from Mississippi who found her way to Minnesota and petitioned for her freedom in court in 1860 — and won. \nFollowing the program\, there will be a book signing and books will be available for purchase thanks to Pearl Street Books. \nThis program is sponsored by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and by the SELCO Library System.

SUMMARY:The Pulse of the Planet: Big Rivers and Their Role in Sustaining Life with Dean Klinkenberg
DESCRIPTION:Big rivers are one of nature’s greatest gifts\, yet we fundamentally misunderstand them. We see them as a threat when they run high\, but otherwise value them mostly for what we can move on top of them. Big rivers are complete systems that move and circulate water and nutrients\, creating and sustaining life from the smallest microorganisms to the largest predators. They work because the water\, trees\, grasses\, rocks\, and sand provide homes and sustenance for fish\, mammals\, rodents\, insects\, birds\, and so much more. We need big rivers\, for the life they create and sustain\, for their beauty\, for the sanctuary they offer from the stresses and demands of modern civilization. Big rivers also remind us that we are just one part of a big and complex world\, one that we need to take care of for our own survival. \nDean Klinkenberg is a St. Louis-based writer who focuses much of his writing and research on the Mississippi River. He has driven virtually all of the Great River Road\, hiked and canoed the river on multi-day expeditions\, and cruised on the American Queen steamboat as a guest lecturer. He is the author of the book “The Wild Mississippi: A State-by-State Guide to the River’s Natural Wonders”. Dean is a longtime partner in the Mississippi River Network (MRN)\, a coalition of organizations advocating for healthy and resilient river ecosystems.

This series will be led by Anna Kitzmann\, a member of Plant Partners\, a Gundersen Health System volunteer employee group\, which seeks to promote food is medicine. In addition to being a physician\, Anna is a Certified Culinary Medicine Specialist with a plant-based nutrition certificate and has taught numerous Culinary Medicine classes locally.
