DESCRIPTION:This program is co-hosted with La Crescent Live! Join us at the City Lot space behind the La Crescent Public Library. All ages are welcome to attend this free event! \nEnjoy the unique and compelling sounds of Albania\, Bulgaria\, Macedonia\, and Turkey\, as well as songs from the Romani people\, Serbia\, Bosnia\, Hungary\, Ukraine\, Georgia\, and Spain. BALKAN BLUE is a collective of musicians delivering complex melodies and danceable acoustic beats from the Balkans and beyond\, using traditional folk instruments and hand percussion. Though seemingly obscure\, Balkan music is an undercurrent phenomena\, with lots of folk dancers and niche musicians familiar with and enjoying the style. The band offers workshops and storytelling based listening events along their travels. \nFeaturing:\nNicolle (Jensen) Roen on vocals\, accordion\, Macedonia tambura\, and percussion – based partly in Winona MN (her hometown) and Santa Fe\, NM (since 2003)\, Nicolle Roen is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist\, utilizing an accordion and Tambura (traditional stringed instrument of Macedonia and northern Greece) to accompany her voice. \nFrank Bramlitt on percussion: doumbek\, frame drum\, riq\, tapan\, and Albanian daire – Frank Bramlitt is a hand percussionist extraordinaire\, storyteller\, and general grand showman with a history of performing for belly dancers and at Ren fairs. \nSally Reimer of Galesville\, WI joins the group on mandolin and bass\, and Sophie Rogg of Decorah\, IA joins on vocals and hand percussion.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the City Lot behind the Library! Paper Plains invites the community to create paper from regionally-harvested\, invasive plants. It is an interactive experience in papermaking and native prairie planting. Workshop leaders demonstrate techniques to participants and engage in a dialogue about the history of invasive plants in Minnesota. Tools in this mobile art studio are adaptable for people of all ages and abilities. The paper that participants make is unique\, embedded with native prairie seeds\, and carries a little piece of the Great Plains. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2023 Driftless Regional Read book discussion of “What Happened To You? Conversations on Trauma\, Resilience\, and Healing” by Dr. Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey. This year’s regional read book and programming focuses on the topic of mental health. \nCopies of the book are available for free beginning September 1st while supplies last. La Crescent copies have been purchased and made available thanks to a donation from our Friends of the Library. The book and audiobook are also widely available in the SELCO library system\, and copies will be at the La Crescent Library for checkout. Just ask at the desk! \nThe Regional Read invites communities from the Driftless area comprising 9 local counties: Buffalo\, Jackson\, Juneau\, La Crosse\, Monroe\, Trempealeau\, Vernon\, Houston\, & Winona to come together to read one book annually and participate in a series of book chats\, lectures and programs around a central theme. Each year we cultivate opportunities to build community and empower creative change through inclusive conversations\, presentations and community dialogues. This year the topic of the Regional Read is mental health and our goals are destigmatizing mental illness\, cultivating opportunities for community connection\, and increasing awareness of local resources for mental health support. The book “What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma\, Resiliency\, and Healing\,” by Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey was selected as this year’s Regional Read title to help our community better understand trauma and its impact on our physical and mental health. Programming will include book discussions\, talks on the exploration of the mental health crisis in our region\, a community mental health resource fair as well as programs offering practical applications to cultivate mental health (mindfulness\, wellness practices\, etc.).

DESCRIPTION:June 14\, 2023 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \n  \n[LA CRESCENT\, MN] – La Crescent Public Library presents the “Testify: Americana Slavery Today” photo gallery exhibit at La Crescent Public Library from June 20th – July 20th\, 2023. This event is free and open to the public during library hours. (Monday – Friday\, 10am – 6pm; Saturday\, 10am – 2pm) \n  \nFormer Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and NFL Hall of Famer Justice Alan Page and his family are again presenting their exhibit “TESTIFY: Americana from Slavery to Today.” This impactful exhibit of the Diane and Alan Page Collection of African-American art and artifacts was originally presented at the Hennepin County Library in 2018. Following the overwhelmingly positive response from the public\, the exhibit has returned in 2023 with a renewed call to action and a wider reach. It is now accessible to the public in Southeast Minnesota as a large-format\, high resolution photo gallery. The family hopes the exhibit will help bridge divides\, deepen dialogue and encourage action on justice. “The objects in the exhibit…juxtapose artifacts from our often-painful shared history with inspiring imagery and works of art that help us rise above it\,” the late Diane Sims Page said of the collection she started. She hoped that “by coming to grips with our past\, we can come together in the future.” Please join us to learn and reflect on the power we each have to act for causes of justice. \n  \nThe Pages produced the traveling exhibit in collaboration with local artist and designer Kurt Mueller and with the support of SELCO\, Great River Regional Library\, the Friends of the Hennepin County Library\, and The McKnight Foundation. Annuities? Do you have a Power of Attorney (POA)? An advanced directive? What do you know about assisted living needs and facilities?\nCome and participate in a preview of the process of Planning for the End. Couples are strongly encouraged to attend together. If appropriate\, you might include other family. \nSteve Mau\, presents an overview and preview of his Planning for the End program with La Crescent-Hokah Community Education this fall. At this preview presentation on Thursday\, November 10\, 2022 at 6:30pm\, attendees will be able to see what information the full 10-part program runs through\, so they can “try before they buy” into the course\, which costs only $5 and starts this January. In this preview\, Mau will offer many points to think about when planning for your own end of life plans or those of a loved one. Using personal experience\, a professional background in financial services\, and a good sense of humor\, attendees will gain a guide in Mau to help them through this transition process.
