SUMMARY:“TESTIFY” EXHIBIT AT La Crescent Public Library
DESCRIPTION:June 14\, 2023 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \n  \n[LA CRESCENT\, MN] – La Crescent Public Library presents the “Testify: Americana Slavery Today” photo gallery exhibit at La Crescent Public Library from June 20th – July 20th\, 2023. This event is free and open to the public during library hours. (Monday – Friday\, 10am – 6pm; Saturday\, 10am – 2pm) \n  \nFormer Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and NFL Hall of Famer Justice Alan Page and his family are again presenting their exhibit “TESTIFY: Americana from Slavery to Today.” This impactful exhibit of the Diane and Alan Page Collection of African-American art and artifacts was originally presented at the Hennepin County Library in 2018. Following the overwhelmingly positive response from the public\, the exhibit has returned in 2023 with a renewed call to action and a wider reach. It is now accessible to the public in Southeast Minnesota as a large-format\, high resolution photo gallery. The family hopes the exhibit will help bridge divides\, deepen dialogue and encourage action on justice. “The objects in the exhibit…juxtapose artifacts from our often-painful shared history with inspiring imagery and works of art that help us rise above it\,” the late Diane Sims Page said of the collection she started. She hoped that “by coming to grips with our past\, we can come together in the future.” Please join us to learn and reflect on the power we each have to act for causes of justice. \n  \nThe Pages produced the traveling exhibit in collaboration with local artist and designer Kurt Mueller and with the support of SELCO\, Great River Regional Library\, the Friends of the Hennepin County Library\, and The McKnight Foundation. For more information on Library Legacy funding\, and a complete schedule of Legacy-funded events in the region\, visit https://legacy.selco.info/. \n  \nAbout SELCO \nSELCO\, Southeastern Libraries Cooperating\, is a regional library system based in Rochester\, MN. Covering an 11-county region\, its membership is made up of 37 public libraries. Member libraries share resources\, programs\, personnel and technical innovations to achieve common goals and meet the needs of individual communities. For more information\, go to www.selco.info. \n  \nAbout Library Legacy Funding \nThis program is made possible by the people of Minnesota through Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACHF). The ACHF was created in 2008 from the Clean Water\, Land and Legacy amendment to the Minnesota State Constitution. Minnesota’s 365 public libraries receive funding distributed through existing formulas to the 12 Minnesota Regional Library Systems to provide programs and services in four areas: arts (visual\, performing and media)\, culture\, literature and Minnesota history.

SUMMARY:Author Natalie Warren: Hudson Bay Bound
DESCRIPTION:Grab a paddle and join Natalie Warren on her journey to become one of the first two women to paddle over 2\,000 miles from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay. This talk goes beyond day-to-day life on trail—wildlife encounters\, fierce weather\, struggles in an enduring friendship\, a furry addition to the expedition team\, and a polar bear sighting—to ponder how we come to know and care for places threatened by rapidly changing physical\, social\, and cultural landscapes. Through music\, storytelling\, and poetry\, Natalie inspires listeners to consider: What can water teach us about interconnectivity? As harmful repercussions of human actions are unveiled\, what can water show us about resilience\, reciprocity\, and hope? Get excited for your next adventure with a desire to know\, feel\, and breathe the complex world around you. \nThis project has been funded by the people of Minnesota through the Arts and Cultural Heritage Library Legacy fund\, in cooperation with SELCO – our regional library system.

SUMMARY:Book Club at the Library
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the library for our June Book Club discussion! This month we’re reading The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell (author of Cloud Atlas). Copies are available at the checkout desk. Just ask! \nAbout the book:\nFollowing a scalding row with her mother\, fifteen-year-old Holly Sykes slams the door on her old life. But Holly is no typical teenage runaway: a sensitive child once contacted by voices she knew only as “the radio people\,” Holly is a lightning rod for psychic phenomena. Now\, as she wanders deeper into the English countryside\, visions and coincidences reorder her reality until they assume the aura of a nightmare brought to life.\nFor Holly has caught the attention of a cabal of dangerous mystics—and their enemies. But her lost weekend is merely the prelude to a shocking disappearance that leaves her family irrevocably scarred. This unsolved mystery will echo through every decade of Holly’s life\, affecting all the people Holly loves—even the ones who are not yet born.\nA Cambridge scholarship boy grooming himself for wealth and influence\, a conflicted father who feels alive only while reporting from occupied Iraq\, a middle-aged writer mourning his exile from the bestseller list—all have a part to play in this surreal\, invisible war on the margins of our world. From the medieval Swiss Alps to the nineteenth-century Australian bush\, from a hotel in Shanghai to a Manhattan townhouse in the near future\, their stories come together in moments of everyday grace and extraordinary wonder.
