Born and raised near Minneapolis, author Kent Nerburn went on to the University of Minnesota for American Studies, then to several post-graduate studies in Religion, Humanities, and Art. He worked for several years on the Red Lake Ojibwe reservation, helping students collect the memories of the tribal elders. This experience introduced him to the native spiritual traditions that are central to the messages of his writings.

He characterizes his work as a “constant search, from various perspecitves, for an authentic American spirituality that integrates our western Judeo-Christian tradition with other traditions of the world, especially the indigenous spirituality of the people who first inhabited this continent.” [https://kentnerburn.com/about]
